What a single coaching programme can change
How a newly appointed divisional head learned to stand up for himself and lead with clarity and conviction.
Initial situation:
Mr Schmitt* (name changed), 40 years old, married with three children, was promoted to the second management tier of a DAX 40 corporation following a successful internal audit.
As a technically skilled manager with clear values such as fairness, integrity, and humility, he had many strengths – but his impact as a leader did not meet expectations. He appeared too factual, too reserved, and too focused on content. In discussions, he found it difficult to win others over to his ideas or to take a clear position.
His aim: to appear more self-assured in his new leadership role – and to continue growing professionally.
My mandate:
To help Mr Schmitt strengthen his leadership presence without changing who he is.
The goal: greater self-confidence and clarity in his leadership style, making achievements visible, and acting with assurance in challenging conversations.
Aproach:
Already in the first session it became clear: Mr Schmitt found it hard to take pride in his own achievements.
In the following sessions, we worked in a practical way on specific professional situations: his inaugural speech, important negotiations, internal conflicts.
At the same time, we reflected on personal beliefs and patterns of thinking – examining which attitudes empowered him and which held him back.
By applying psychological models, he learned to better understand the behaviour of other leaders – and to adjust his own behaviour accordingly.
Coaching became a safe space for reflection, personal growth, and professional development.
Results after a few months:
✔ A stronger personal presence as a leader
✔ Greater confidence in discussions, conflicts, and decision-making
✔ Positive feedback from both his professional and private environment
✔ Inner clarity through ongoing reflection and targeted preparation
„Dad seems somehow stronger than before.“
– Feedback from one of his sons
His growing self-confidence became known internally – leading to new responsibilities, recommendations, and further career steps within the company.
When executive coaching is valuable:
✔ For new or expanded leadership responsibilities
✔ To prepare for audits, presentations, or challenging negotiations
✔ To strengthen self-confidence, assertiveness, and leadership presence
✔ During career transitions or development phases
✔ To reflect on and further develop one’s leadership identity
✔ When a trusted sparring partner is needed for clarity and relief
