Greater Composure and Self-Worth
Composure, work-life balance, self-management, and self-worth
“Composure means letting go of fixed expectations.”
Life often brings things you cannot control. What you can control, however, is your reaction and your inner attitude.
Composure and inner calm can be learned. In coaching, you acquire effective methods that allow you to move through life with equanimity, independent of external circumstances. You learn to enjoy your life in a relaxed way, discover ways to handle stress more easily, and become a calm anchor within yourself.
Composure means staying calm and confident even in difficult situations and keeping the necessary distance so you can draw on your resources and act flexibly and with ease to find new solutions.
Stress management is, at its core, always self-management: it is about reaching your own goals with the resources and abilities you have, without overextending or exhausting yourself.
Stress is a felt sense of being overwhelmed, and thus the fear of not being up to the situation. That is why it is important to gain emotional distance and then assess realistically what needs to be done and what you want to do.
It helps to recall the success factors, competencies, and strengths you brought to earlier challenges and to use them to derive possible ways forward. Stress and fear can even help you become more adaptable and find new, smart solutions.
Courage is often fear that has been overcome.
The causes of too much stress, too little composure, a lack of self-worth, and an unsatisfying work-life balance usually lie in childhood conditioning by family and social environment. This conditioning then hardens into habits.
Causes of stress or inner tension can include, for example, the following beliefs:
- I am not good enough.
- I have to be perfect, and it is never perfect enough. I should be doing everything even better, and mistakes must be avoided at all costs.
- I have to hurry and be much faster. It is never fast enough. If I do not rush and put myself under pressure, I will never get it done.
- I have to satisfy other people’s needs and help others, or I am worthless. Others matter more than I do, and I adapt in order to be recognized and loved.
- I always have to be strong, and no one is allowed to notice when I am weak. I can do everything on my own and never want to depend on help.
- If I have not pushed myself to the absolute limit, it is worth nothing. I always have to give everything and then some. If I do not achieve, I am worth nothing.
- I have to keep everything under control and in hand so that nothing terrible happens.
- I feel responsible for everyone else and would love to save the world.
- I always have to be the best, or I have failed.
